Courtney & Scott’s Summer Wedding at the Schlitz-Audubon Nature Center

March 29, 2021

A WLC Connection

Scott and Courtney met through mutual friends at Wisconsin Lutheran College. After 11 months of dating, Courtney was waiting patiently for Scott to propose. He was in the process of buying a house, and his loan officer advised him, “don’t buy anything expensive right now.”

Once Scott closed on the house, he snatched up an engagement ring from Harry Glinberg in Wauwatosa. On Christmas Day, after church at St. Peter Lutheran, Courtney and Scott were taking pictures inside the church when he popped the question. The proposal was recorded and shared with family and friends.

Wedding Planning

Courtney and Scott planned a July wedding, which hit mid-pandemic. “Our plans changed so many times due to the pandemic. We were excited to not only get married on the original date we had planned, but to also be married in the church we love with a good portion of the people we had originally invited.”

The pandemic influenced some decisions Scott and Courtney made for their wedding, as some businesses were closed. “Huge shoutout to DuBois Formalwear. They were able to get our suits together two weeks before the wedding.”

Food was catered by Saz’s. “Katie Hoffman was great in working with us and modifying our expectations as things opened and closed and reopened and closed again—then opened again.” The couple even chose Saz’s State House for their rehearsal dinner

A Unique Church Ceremony

The church ceremony was performed by Pastor Greg Lyon, who is Courtney’s cousin by marriage. “Pastor Greg wrote a beautiful sermon, very appropriate for the times.” Courtney’s twin sister Lauren served as Matron of Honor and Scott’s best friend Josh served as Best Man. The ceremony was made particularly unique by the inclusion of a Digital Usher. “The mutual friend who first connected us, Kristi, broadcast the wedding on Facebook Live. Family and friends had been so supportive and understanding during this pandemic wedding!”

SAZs & Simma’s at the Schlitz-Audubon Reception

The reception was held at the Schlitz Audubon Nature Center. “The birds of prey were the highlight of cocktail hour! The bald eagle was beautiful! We love America, so to have the bald eagle there to socialize with our guests just made the evening even more amazing.” The couple used DeGroot Film Co. for their wedding photos and were beyond pleased. The bride and groom agree that the photos down by the beach and the beautiful Nature Center hall are two of their favorite things about their wedding day.

Delicious food was catered by Saz’s, with hors d’oeuvres of bacon-wrapped water chestnuts, Wisconsin lollipops, caprese bruschetta, and avocado & chipotle deviled eggs. For dinner, the main courses included Mexican street tacos (carne asada with smoked bacon and grilled chicken), southwest pepper jack mac n cheese martinis with marsala wine sauce and bacon, and a turkey carvery.

For dessert, Simma’s provided mini European-style desserts. There was also a coffee bar and a late-night snack of barbecue pulled pork sandwiches and potato chips. To outfit the space with furniture and flowers, blooms hailed from Creative Floral Designs while vintage accent pieces and linens came courtesy of Something Borrowed and More. “Huge shout-out to Jen for sending flowers to aunts and uncles who couldn’t be there with us!”

Celebrity Guests

That’s right—Scott and Courtney had quite the string of celebrity appearances at their wedding. “The Queen of England, Baby Yoda, Sally Field, Walt Disney, and George Clooney made surprise appearances for our reception! We were so happy to see that they could make it and enjoy the reception as much as our other guests.” Courtney’s sister, brother-in-law, and parents had cardboard cutouts seated at a special table for these guests of honor. “They were more than willing to sit for photographs with our wonderful guests!”
