Black, Taupe, and Ivory Elegance with Intimate and Joyful Vibes

How They Met

Cody and Mikayla met online during the uncertainty of the COVID pandemic—a time when the world felt unpredictable, yet their connection felt effortlessly right. Both working in the events industry, they were navigating similar challenges, which created an instant bond. From their very first conversation, it was clear that something special was unfolding. That feeling only deepened, and within their first week of meeting, they went on three dates—each one reaffirming what they already sensed: this was the beginning of something truly amazing.

How They Got Engaged

“Our engagement was a perfect mix of intention and surprise. We had the incredible experience of designing my engagement ring together, working with Alyssa from Alyssa & Anna Jewelry to create a truly one-of-a-kind piece. While I was part of the ring design, Cody took the lead on planning the proposal.

During a vacation in Florida, we visited Manatee Park—a beautiful and peaceful spot where we could take in the scenery. As we stood on a bridge overlooking the water, completely in the moment, Cody got down on one knee and popped the question. It was the easiest “yes” of my life!”

The Planning Process

Wedding Date: October 4, 2024
Guest Count: 105
Style/Theme: Intimate Modern Romance
Wedding Colors: Black, Taupe, Beige, Ivory

What was your favorite design?
“Creating an intimate and warm atmosphere was so important to us, and my favorite design element was the floral and candle work. The ribbed vases added such a unique texture and elegance, truly transforming the space. The florals from Reflections of You were everything I had envisioned—incorporating sand garden roses and anemones, which made such a stunning statement. The soft glow from the candles complemented the florals perfectly, making the whole setting feel romantic, warm, and timeless.”

How many dresses did you try on?
“On my wedding dress journey, I visited two bridal shops, with Rare Bridal being the last stop. From the moment we walked in, the team at Rare Bridal made me feel so special, creating an experience I’ll never forget.

We started by trying on a few dresses I had picked out, but then our stylist had a suggestion—one I hadn’t initially considered. As soon as I put it on, I knew it was something special. It was the perfect blend of unique and timeless, with a stunning satin bottom that felt so classic. The ivory candle-tone color complemented my skin beautifully, making it feel like it was truly made for me. But the moment that sealed it? When they placed the cathedral-length veil on me—at that point, we all just knew. It was the one.”

“Our ceremony was simple, yet so meaningful, set against the stunning backdrop of Lake Michigan. The weather couldn’t have been more perfect—sunshine with a light breeze, making the moment feel even more magical.

One of the most special parts of the ceremony was having my mother walk me down the aisle, a moment we will both cherish forever. Another highlight was having our Golden Retriever, Cheddar, standing proudly next to the groomsmen, making our day even more personal and heartwarming.

Our officiant was my Aunt Lynn, and she did an incredible job—especially considering it was her very first wedding! One of the most meaningful parts of the ceremony was our ring warming tradition, where both of our moms held our wedding rings and gave their well wishes before we exchanged them. It was such a beautiful way to include them in this important moment.”

Ceremony Decor
“Our ceremony space was designed to feel intimate, elegant, and timeless. We had beautiful ground florals framing the front of the ceremony, creating a natural and romantic focal point. The soft floral arrangements added warmth and dimension without overpowering the space. Crisp white chairs lined the aisle, keeping the look classic and refined while allowing the florals to truly shine. The overall design felt effortlessly elegant, setting the perfect tone for our vows.”

“We hosted our reception at Stella Van Buren, and it was truly the perfect choice for us. Having worked in the wedding industry for over 10 years, picking a venue was surprisingly challenging—so many Milwaukee venues held memories from past weddings and events, but none truly felt like us.

Stella was different. Since it’s a restaurant rather than a traditional wedding venue, it had a naturally stunning ambiance that didn’t require much décor. From the stylish bar to the exposed kitchen (which my chef husband absolutely loved!), every detail felt intentional and warm. The floor-to-ceiling drapes added a touch of elegance, and the beige, brown, and ivory tones fit our wedding mood perfectly.

The space was ideal for our intimate guest count, with two attached patios where guests could step outside and enjoy the beautiful weather. Plus, its connection to The Westin Hotel made it incredibly convenient for our guests. It was everything we wanted—elevated, warm, and uniquely us.”

Music & Entertainment: DJ – Sound by Design (Dylan Brudny); Violin – AR Violin

Reception Decor
“The moment you stepped into our reception, you were surrounded by warmth and elegance. The soft glow of candlelight, paired with the floor-to-ceiling drapes, created an inviting and sophisticated ambiance. One of my favorite details was the ribbed glassware, which elevated the traditional cylinder candles, adding texture and refinement to the tablescape. Our décor was floral-heavy with minimal greenery, giving the space a lush, elevated look. The florals truly made a statement, enhancing the romantic and intimate feel of the evening.

To add a fun and personal touch, we had a vintage-inspired phone booth for photos and a voicemail guest book, where guests could leave us heartfelt messages to cherish forever. Another special feature was our portrait area, where guests could have a formal portrait taken—a detail everyone loved since they were all dressed up for the occasion.”

Reception Recap
“We had such a wonderful, memorable reception! One of the best decisions we made was doing our first look earlier in the day, which allowed us to fully enjoy and be present during our cocktail hour. It gave us the perfect opportunity to connect with our guests before the festivities kicked into full gear.

During cocktail hour, we had signature drinks—an espresso martini and a whiskey sour—which were a big hit with our guests. As we sat down for dinner, we opted to skip the traditional cake cutting and instead did a champagne tower pour, which was so much fun and really set the tone for a celebratory meal. The food was absolutely delicious—we’ve received so many compliments since the wedding about how amazing the meal was!

After dinner, we had our first dance, which was such a special moment. As a surprise, we brought back our violinist from the ceremony to kick off the dancing, pairing her electric violin with the DJ. It was such a unique touch that really energized the crowd and got everyone on the dance floor—it was the perfect way to start the party!”

Looking Back

Biggest Wedding Splurge
“Our biggest wedding splurge was definitely the food. As a couple who loves good food, we wanted to make sure our guests had an unforgettable dining experience. We went all out with a delicious menu that got rave reviews from everyone, and it was well worth every penny.”

Which vendor impressed you the most?

“As someone in the industry, it was such a unique experience having my friends as our wedding vendors—they truly went above and beyond.

Dylan Brudny, our DJ, was absolutely incredible. Not only did he keep the dance floor going all night long, but he also nailed the 90s-2000s mix that we both loved. On top of being a talented DJ, Dylan has some serious photography skills and surprised us by sending over some awesome photos the very next day!

Stella Van Buren did an amazing job, especially considering how limited the number of weddings they’ve hosted is. Their staff was exceptional, and everything went off without a hitch.

Our wedding planner, Jenn, was phenomenal throughout the day, ensuring everything ran smoothly and making it an unforgettable experience for us.”

Three Words that Described the Day: Intimate, Elegant, Joyful

What moment sticks with you the most?
“Honestly, the moment that sticks with me the most was simply spending time with our friends and family. Having a day dedicated to celebrating not only us but also the incredible people in our lives was unmatched. The love, laughter, and joy we shared with everyone around us made the day so special and unforgettable.”

Words from a Wedding Industry Professional

What tips or advice would you share with future couples?
“My advice has stayed the same over the years—hire a professional and top-tier vendor team. The vendors you choose will truly make or break your wedding day, so investing in the best is the most important element by far. When you have a talented, experienced team behind you, you can trust that everything will come together seamlessly, leaving you free to enjoy your day.

Also, don’t forget to include your most loved family members in the day. For us, having Cheddar greet our guests as they arrived was a special touch. Plus, having Piccola Pups there meant we could relax and not worry about being “pup parents” on the big day!”

One tip you have for couples when booking their vendors:
“One thing I’d recommend is to remember that investing in quality pays off. With your set budget in mind, decide on your top three priorities—the aspects of your wedding that are most important to you—and allocate your funds there. For the other areas, you can make adjustments to fit your budget. It’s all about balancing your must-haves with smart spending to ensure you’re getting the best experience without compromising on what matters most to you.”
